Clinical Pastoral Education Program

About Our Program

Program Options

Level I and II units of CPE are offered on a unit-by-unit basis.  Level I CPE is a person’s initial unit.  With completion of expected learning outcomes, individuals may then enroll for further units of CPE for continued learning and growth.  One Unit of CPE requires a minimum of 400 hours of learning, of which at least 100 hours are used for educational seminars and supervision with another 300 hours dedicated to providing pastoral care in the hospital setting.  Programs are as follows:

Part-Time Extended Unit of Clinical Pastoral Education

These part-time programs are offered in five or nine month formats.  A part-time schedule has been designed over an extended period to accommodate those attending school and or working in other capacities. Participants attend class on a regular basis along with receiving individual supervision. They provide pastoral care on assigned clinical areas of the hospital as scheduled for the course of the unit.

Full-Time Summer Intensive Unit of Clinical Pastoral Education

A full-time unit of CPE is offered during the summer months for 10 weeks. Participants serve full-time 40 hours per week as a chaplain in assigned clinical areas. Ten of those hours are set aside for seminars and weekly individual supervision.

Full-Time Residency Year of Clinical Pastoral Education

The Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Residency program is a yearlong educational and clinical program designed for ordained and endorsed religious and spiritual leaders who desire to enhance their skills in spiritual care and prepare them for board certification. It normally begins in September and continues to the next September. In that year students receive three units of CPE. Participants serve full-time, 40 hours per week, and work as a chaplain assigned to clinical areas, attend weekly seminars and receive individual supervision. Each student participates in overnight on-call responsibilities. Chaplain residents receive a stipend and employee benefits.
