Mother/Baby

You’ve made it. Congratulations. The birth and delivery are behind you, and now you get to hold your baby for the first time and begin that all-important time of getting to know one another.

As you recover from the birthing experience, you and your baby will receive excellent care from our skilled physicians, providers, nurses and care team.

Before you even arrive, we encourage you to download the Carol Jenkins Barnett Pavilion for Women and Children pregnancy and newborn app. The app offers trusted education, helpful tools and resources to support you through your hospital stay and beyond.

While much of your stay will focus on bonding with your baby, there are a few important items that will need your attention before discharge. During your time with us, you will:

  • Complete the Birth Certificate Worksheet

  • Document your baby’s feedings, whether breastfeeding or bottle feeding

  • Track wet and soiled diapers

  • Watch educational videos designed to prepare you for going home

  • Rest and recover!

Your nurse will guide you through each step and make sure you feel confident and prepared for the day you take your baby home.

Newborn Hearing, Screening and Testing

During your stay, your baby will undergo a series of important screening tests, including newborn hearing screening and other standard newborn testing.

These screenings help identify certain medical conditions or birth differences that may not have been detected during pregnancy. Early identification allows for timely care and support if needed. Our team will explain each test and review the results with you.

Pediatric Hospitalists

Our pediatric hospitalists are board-certified pediatricians who specialize in the care of infants in the hospital setting. After your baby is born, a pediatric hospitalist will provide a thorough check-up each day until discharge.

They will assess your baby’s breathing, feeding, overall health and development, and watch closely for any conditions that may require additional attention. They are also here to answer your questions and provide reassurance during this special time. If specialized care is ever needed, they can coordinate with pediatric specialists to ensure your baby receives seamless, comprehensive care.

Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding provides the perfect amount of nutrients and anti-infective properties for your baby’s exact needs. Our team of International Board-Certified Lactation Specialists will help you learn the breastfeeding techniques you need to provide the best nutrition for your baby. In addition to optimal nutrition, breastfeeding also contributes to the emotional development of your baby. We look forward to supporting your breastfeeding goals. Along with help and support during your hospital stay, we have a breastfeeding support line that offers telephone counsel and referrals to community breastfeeding resources as well as a twice-a-month Breastfeeding Support Group and Breastfeeding Prep Series.
