A Smooth Journey to Heart Repair

Glenn’s TAVR Story

“I couldn’t have asked for it to go any better.”

When Glenn Schroeder went in for a routine checkup, he wasn’t expecting anything unusual. He was feeling fine and didn’t have any symptoms. But during the exam, his physician noticed a change in his heart murmur.

That small discovery set him on the path to a procedure that would protect his health for years to come.

Even though Glenn felt well, his physician wanted to be sure nothing more serious was developing. He referred Glenn to Dr. Zia Rab, a Watson Clinic cardiologist affiliated with Lakeland Regional Health for an echocardiogram. The test showed his aortic valve needed treatment.

Additional tests were performed and labs were conducted. Dr. Rab and Dr.  Mohammed Hassan, a Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Lakeland Regional Health, determined that Glenn was a candidate for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).

TAVR is a less invasive option for treating a damaged aortic valve that no longer opens or closes as it should. Rather than performing open-heart surgery, the surgeon places a new valve through a small access point in the leg and positions it within the existing valve. This approach helps restore blood flow, eases symptoms such as tiredness or shortness of breath, and typically offers a faster, smoother recovery with a shorter hospital stay.

Once approved for the procedure, Glenn waited about six weeks for his surgery date and was glad when the day arrived. His TAVR procedure began in the morning, and he was home by noon the next day.

He was pleased with the attention and treatment he received from his physicians and care team and was impressed to see the reports from the procedure appear in MyChart right away.

Now, Glenn is doing well and continues with routine checkups.

“I couldn’t have asked for it to go any better,” says Glenn.

Lifesaving Care

If you have been told you have a heart murmur or aortic stenosis, talk with your cardiologist about whether TAVR may be right for you.
