Lakeland Regional Health Honors the Barnett Family and Announces Major Expansion for Women and Children’s Services

May 5, 2025

Lakeland, FL – Lakeland Regional Health held its annual Philanthropist and Sarah D. McKay Advocate of the Year Celebration on Monday, April 28, 2025, honoring the extraordinary legacy and impact of the Barnett Family. Barney Barnett was named the 2025 Sarah D. McKay Advocate of the Year, and the entire Barnett Family was recognized as Philanthropists of the Year.

Themed “Sounds of Broadway”, the evening was filled with heartfelt moments and show-stopping performances, including musical highlights from Wicked by Broadway stars Julie Reiber, Jackie Burns, and Jennifer DiNoia — three women who have portrayed “Elphaba” more than anyone else in the world.

The most moving moment of the night came during a powerful tribute to the late Carol Jenkins Barnett. As the voices of Broadway royalty joined in a breathtaking arrangement of “For Good”, the stage was filled with emotional images of Carol and the entire Barnett Family. The performance brought tears to the room, serving as a deeply personal and poignant reminder of Carol’s lasting influence, her love of community, and her boundless generosity. The song’s famous lyrics, “Because I knew you, I have been changed for good,” served as a symbol for anyone who had the honor of meeting Carol.

In a historic announcement that underscored the significance of the evening, the Barnett Family revealed a transformational lead gift to support the creation of The Carol Jenkins Barnett Pavilion for Women and Children – South. This new ambulatory pavilion will extend access to high-quality, specialized care for women and children across the region. Modeled after the nationally recognized Carol Jenkins Barnett Pavilion for Women and Children on the main campus, the new facility will be located along Highway 98 South in Lakeland.

Additionally, it was announced that Bill and Kathy Pou committed a generous major gift toward the project, joining the Barnett Family in launching what will be a $50 million campaign to advance women’s and children’s healthcare in our community.

“We are honored to help kick start this campaign,” Bill Pou stated. “We are so proud of what Lakeland Regional Health is doing for our community.”

“We are so pleased to honor Barney and the Barnett Family in this way,” said Timothy J. Boynton, MBA, Senior Vice President of Development and Chief Public Relations and Communications Officer. “Their unwavering advocacy and generosity allow us to deliver the very best care to the patients and families we serve.”

“We are truly privileged to continue the work of providing access to care for women and children in our community thanks to both the Barnett Family and the Pou Family’s incredible generosity,” said Danielle Drummond, MS, FACHE, Lakeland Regional Health President and CEO. “These transformational gifts have already brought us halfway to our $50 million goal — and we’re just getting started.”

“On behalf of our entire family, Wesley and I want to share what a privilege it is to be a part of Lakeland Regional Health’s mission,” said Ashley Bell Barnett. Wesley Barnett added, “This new pavilion will be a place of hope, healing, and innovation — and we are thrilled to watch it come to life.”

“We feel incredibly fortunate to once again work alongside Lakeland Regional Health to continue honoring Carol’s legacy,” said Barney Barnett. “Her impact on this community extends far beyond the walls of the beautiful pavilion that bears her name, and we look forward to creating yet another pathway for her love of Lakeland and generous spirit to shine on and inspire others.”

The Barnett Family’s relationship with Lakeland Regional Health is rooted in a deep and enduring passion for ensuring access to exceptional healthcare in our community. Their commitment extends far beyond philanthropy — they are active partners, trusted advisors, and steadfast advocates for our mission. As Lakeland continues to grow, the Barnett Family remains with us every step of the way, helping to shape a healthier, stronger future for all.
