Specialized Services

  • Esophageal, gastric and reflux surgery
  • Colorectal surgery
  • Endocrine surgery (thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal)

Advanced Technology for Every Need

We provide patients with multidisciplinary care using the latest treatments and technology available. Many of these procedures use minimally invasive techniques.

Histotripsy for liver tumors

Histotripsy is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-intensity sound waves to destroy liver tumors. It requires no cuts or incisions, no needles, and no ionizing radiation.  The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, using ultrasound imaging to locate the targeted tissue and monitor treatment in real time.

The TGH Cancer Institute | LRH Hollis Cancer Center is the first in Polk County to offer histotripsy, using the HistoSonics Edison® System — the first histotripsy platform authorized by the FDA.

Liver, pancreas, and bile duct surgery

  • Robotic Whipple surgery — Removes tumors of the pancreas, performed through small incisions rather than one large incision
  • Microwave ablation — Uses microwave energy to heat and destroy liver tumors
  • Irreversible electroporation (IRE) — Uses electrical pulses to destroy tumors that cannot be surgically removed
  • Regional hepatic artery infusion – Delivers chemotherapy directly to the liver via a pump, improving survival rates and chances for resection for patients with metastases from colorectal cancer and cholangiocarcinoma
  • Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) – In this two-step cancer treatment, a surgeon removes tumors from the abdomen and then pumps heated chemotherapy drugs directly into the abdominal cavity to destroy any remaining microscopic cancer cells.

Melanoma, skin, and soft tissue surgery

  • Sentinel node biopsy — Examines the first lymph node or nodes melanoma would reach, to determine whether it has spread
  • Lymphadenectomy — Removes lymph nodes found to contain cancer
  • Plastic reconstruction — Restores appearance and function, performed alongside skin and soft tissue resection

Head and neck surgery

  • Laryngectomy – Removes cancers of the voice box
  • Composite resection – Removes complex tumors of the jaw and surrounding structure
  • Microvascular free flap tissue reconstruction – Uses tissue from other areas to rebuild areas of the head and neck after surgery

Endocrine surgery

  • Thyroidectomy — Removes benign and malignant thyroid nodules through minimally invasive surgical techniques and laser probe technology to improve detection

Esophageal and reflux surgery

Our multidisciplinary swallowing and motility team can evaluate patients before and after anti-reflux surgeries and esophageal resections, coordinating surgery, gastroenterology, and speech-language pathology to improve outcomes.

Our philosophy is to provide world-renowned care close to home.
