From Excess Skin to Confidence: A Transformative Journey in Plastic Surgery

June 23, 2026

“I feel better. My confidence is a lot better.”

Life can throw unexpected challenges your way. For Patricia, a patient of LRH plastic surgeon Dr. David Straughan, managing decades of diabetes was already a daily balancing act, but when a problematic belly fold after weight loss began causing discomfort, irritation, and infection, it became clear that surgery was necessary.

“I was trying so hard to get healthy, and then this created another problem. It was raw and bleeding,” she shared. After consulting a dermatologist and her primary care physician, a panniculectomy (a procedure to remove excess skin) was recommended.

The journey to surgery wasn’t simple. Family health crises, including caring for both parents after their cancer diagnoses, meant multiple postponements. She also had to decide whether she would add some related procedures not covered by insurance. She ultimately decided to have all of the abdominal work, including liposuction, done at one time. “Why go through it twice? Do it once, bite the bullet, get it all done,” she said, deciding one comprehensive procedure made the most sense.

Dr. Straughan and his team guided her through every step. The surgery involved removing excess skin and fat, performing targeted liposuction, and even creating a new belly button. Recovery brought its challenges, from managing drainage bulbs to navigating healing as a diabetic, but attentive care and support made a critical difference.

The results were transformative. She went from a size 20 to a size 8, regaining confidence, comfort, and a sense of joy. “I feel better. My confidence is a lot better.”

Looking back, her advice to anyone considering surgery is clear:

“You won’t regret it. While you might question it during the process, it’s worth it — a million times over.”

Beyond the physical transformation, the experience brought her a renewed sense of empowerment and well-being.

Her story is a testament to what can happen when determination meets compassionate, expert care. With Dr. Straughan and his team guiding her through a thoughtful process, she not only found relief from her medical issue but also a newfound confidence and joy in everyday life.

“I haven’t been this happy in years,” she said.
