LAKELAND, Fla. – The Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center is the first in Polk County to acquire the Edison® Histotripsy System to treat liver tumors. Histotripsy is a new treatment that uses high-intensity sound waves to destroy liver tumors in a single outpatient procedure.
Edison, the first histotripsy platform approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), uses ultrasound imaging and proprietary technology to deliver non-invasive treatments.
“We are dedicated to bringing the newest and most promising technologies to our patients,” said Dr. Timothy J. Regan, president of Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center and chief medical officer of Lakeland Regional Health. “As a non-invasive treatment, histotripsy provides a revolutionary solution for many of our patients with liver disease who aren’t eligible for, or do not choose to have, traditional treatment.”
Histotripsy uses micro-bubbles to destroy targeted tissues and avoids ionizing radiation, heat damage from thermal technologies, and incisions or needles from traditional treatments. Doctors and researchers have studied histotripsy for more than 20 years, including in clinical trials. In recent clinical trials in the United States and Europe, histotripsy was used successfully in humans to destroy primary and metastatic liver tumors.
“We are excited to have another treatment option for patients with liver tumors,” said Dr. Manuel Molina-Vega, a surgical oncologist at Tampa General Cancer Institute | Lakeland Regional Health Hollis Cancer Center. “Histotripsy provides us with a non-invasive method to treat tumors that would be difficult to remove surgically or to combine with other liver treatment options to give our patients the best possible clinical outcomes.”
